Current trends have shown that Black young people
are more likely to underachieve in the British educational system,
to be excluded from school, be unemployed, and be over-represented
in the prison population and mental institutions. Recent statistics
have indicated that black pupils are least expected to achieve GCSE
grades between A-C. These daily experiences demonstrate the great
need to pay particular attention to children and young people as a
vital part of the very existence of the black community.
The Education forum, made up of education officers, teachers and headteachers
from within the community, was established to confine these reports
to the history books. Their objectives are:
|
To support churches
in establishing their own schools |
|
To respond to
education policy and legislation |
|
To encourage churches
to participate in Religious Education activities |
 |
To develop a support
network for Black Christian Teachers |
 |
To encourage churches
to assist parents in developing their roles in the education
of their children |
 |
To network with Supplementary
Schools |
Among the work done by the forum was making representation
to the Prime Ministers Social Exclusion Unit on the issue of
exclusion and truancy. In addition it held the ground breaking conference
Making the Grade in April 2000, designed to support teachers, and
parents in raising the educational achievement of Black pupils. In
addition it held a teachers reception in May 2002 which will be developed
into a network forum.
