The Children and Youth Commission, affectionately
known as CandY, was set up in 1997 to facilitate the total
spiritual, moral and physical welfare of all the children and young
people in Black Majority Churches (BMCs) and the wider Black community.
CandY does this by promoting the work of youth, children and community
development among youth leaders, pastors and churches, fostering relationships
between them all.
Their aims also include initiating research and strategies for the
development of children and youth and promoting inclusiveness of disabled
black children in the life of the church. Importantly, CandY does
not just talk about young people but encourages their full involvement
in the work that they do.
CandY does not seek to take over or duplicate the concerns of our
constituency but their task is to empower churches, groups or agencies
and to act as a facilitator in all that needs to be achieved for the
benefit of young people and children. As an ACEA sub-group the work
of this commission involves supporting churches and individuals who
are committed to the development of the youth. This is expressed by
being a focal point of information for them and representing their
shared perspectives to the media, statutory bodies and government
agencies.
One of the key responsibilities of the commission is to improve the
priority and quality of youthwork in BMCs. In addition it is to ensure
that churches make their provision available for all the young people
in their locality. Much of this work is done through the commissions
annual conference Serve them Right, which takes place in September/October
of each year.
