Equal opportunity policies are designed to ensure
that organisations treat all their staff, volunteers and those who
work for them in a fair and equitable manner. It should also apply
to those who use their services or aspire to join. Current legislation
makes it illegal for organisations to discriminate or treat someone
differently and unfairly in the areas of, suitability, pay, training
and development and career progression solely on the basis of their
ethnicity, gender, age and disability.
Successful test cases in the European Courts have ruled that individuals
can no longer be discriminated on the basis of their sexuality as
this is a violation of their human rights. However, Churches and religious
organisation can discriminate on the basis of conscience and the demands
of their faith.
It is therefore important that organisations have a strong ethos statement
and code of conduct which sets the parameters for all those involved
in their delivery.
